How do I know what surveillance camera or system I should buy?
We get straight to the point in our customer Surveillance System Buyer's Guide for business or home.
Why should I buy a surveillance system?
The primary and obvious reason is for security from crime. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, "Malicious property damage is the most prevalent type of household crime experienced in Australia" (1) with 555,900 cases in 2012/13 alone. Furthermore between 2015 and 2016 all other incidences of crime such as motor vehicle theft, homicide, sexual assault, unlawful entry and robbery has increased. (2) Another factor to consider is that Australia's population is growing and is becoming increasingly concentrated in the cities. (3) And with an increase in population usually follows an increase in crime rates.
But surveillance cameras' uses aren't limited to security threats from outside sources. Many customers find them great to record family memories. To keep an eye on the children at play or when visitors are in the home. And with the invention of remote viewing technology its now possible to monitor the home or business from anywhere in the world with your device. All you need is an internet connection. Business owner's can use video surveillance to improve employee productivity, improve safety, reduce theft and resolve conflicts.
Does surveillance work?
Yes, definitely! Visible surveillance can be a valuable tool in deterrence and prevention of crime. And if the recorded media is high enough in clarity, it can be essential in the conviction of criminals as well. Here is a good illustration of this.
North Carolina’s Urban Research University conducted a study called “Understanding Decisions to Burglarize from the Offender’s Perspective,” which explored the decision making process of 422 incarcerated male and female burglars. You can read all about it here but in summary this is what they found -
Most burglar's said they considered the close proximity of people, traffic, number of people in the house or business, lack of escape routes, dogs and signs of cameras, increased surveillance and alarms. 83% said they would scout out if alarms were present and 60% would seek an alternative target if there were. Only 13% said they would continue with the robbery.
